Welcome

Welcome to the little island in the Delaware River that evokes big emotions in the hearts of those who visit it. Burlington Island has been known by many different names over the years. The first of these was Mantinicunk, which means “island of pines” in the Lenape language. Other names by which it was called were Stacey Island (after a Burlington Quaker who leased it in 1679 under an agreement with New York Governor Andros), High Island, and Beautiful Island. Moreover, it has been home to a Dutch settlement called Verhulsten, a Walloon (see A Brief History) trading post named Fort Wilhelmus, small farms, a gravel quarry, an amusement park and, most recently, a family of bald eagles.

We, the members of the Board of Island Managers sincerely hope that you will enjoy your visit to our website. May the information and photographs you find within these pages inspire you to yearn for the same sense of belonging to the island that we and so many others have experienced.
